New Start Creggan Project

YESIP NEW START CREGGAN PROJECT

In 2004, we launched our "EU funded" YESIP "New Start Creggan" programme. As part of this programme pupils from local schools will undertake training in a wide range of water based activities over a 2 year period.

The project aims to provide a non–formal educational setting for a group of young people who are under–performing in school. The project will provide them with skills and qualifications which will enhance their employability. The project also targets young people from disadvantaged areas, large numbers of whom are known to leave school with no formal qualifications (Target wards include: Westland, Diamond, Carn Hill, Shantallow West, Creggan South, Rosemount, Brandywell,Corrody, Victoria).

It is steered by a consortium involving Creggan Country Park, Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership, The Holywell Trust (Peace and Reconciliation Organisation) and participating schools.

The hard work and dedication of students, tutors and teachers was rewarded on Friday 3rd June 2005 when the class of 2005 received final qualifications from Mayor Lynn Fleming. Some of the graduate students are pictured below. If you would like more information on the "New Start Creggan" project, please contact Joanne Mullan on 028 71 363 133.
